Caritas Europa supports the European Social Charter as the ‘Social Constitution of Europe’

Caritas Europa fully supports the Council of Europe’s Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland’s call on the European Commission
to recognise the European Social Charter as the “Social Constitution of Europe” and to consider it as a basis for the European Pillar of Social Rights.

“The Social Charter is important for all European countries. Regarding the EU and its member states, it is clear that to deliver on the fight against poverty and social exclusion, the EU cannot focus on delivering economic growth alone. It must also attach as much importance to delivering social growth. The social regression EU residents have been experiencing during the last decade has to end now!”  said Jorge Nuño Mayer, Secretary General of Caritas Europa.

As a member of the Conference of International NGOs of the Council of Europe, Caritas Europa agrees with the opinion of Mr. Jagland on the European Union’s initiative to establish a European Pillar of Social Rights.

Caritas Europa encourages a meeting at highest level between the European Commission and the Council of Europe to ensure that social rights are at the core of the European construction and that the European Social Charter is adopted as the European social reference.
