Becoming a Saint in politics : The examples of Robert Schuman and Alcide de Gasperi

CONFERENCE

10 OCTOBER 2018 – 19:00
With Victoria Martín de la Torre, journalist and author of the book « Europe, a leap into the unknown »

It has been said that power corrupts.
Does that mean that a person who seeks or exercises power
cannot attain sanctity?
Jesus Christ transformed the meaning of power by linking it to service
for the common good.

Two European politicians are in the process of being beatified by the Catholic Church: Robert Schuman and Alcide De Gasperi.
They each understood their life as a mission to ensure peace for future generations in Europe and as a service to their fellow Europeans.

The way they lived out their faith and their understanding of their vocation was shaped by their family upbringing, their school and university education, their personal study, and also by decisive life experiences.

On 10 October we will try to learn more about their personal background, the relationship between their faith and their political engagement,
and how they understood their Christian vocation compared
to other contemporary Christian politicians.
