Re-thinking Europe: the Church is involved in the reflection process

The Bishops assemble to accompany the process of reflection on the future of Europe.
While on 24 March, Pope Francis will receive in presence of Cardinal Marx, in an audience the Heads of State of the EU-27 on the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, the EU Bishops will meet in Brussels from 29 to 31 March to reflect on the future of the European Union.

The COMECE Plenary will be devoted to the preparation of the European Congress which COMECE will organise on 27-29 October in the Vatican. The Bishops will enter into dialogue with political and academic experts  in order to address the main challenges facing Europe today. They will meet in working groups to identify avenues of reflection likely to fuel debates with political actors at the Rome Congress.

Putting the human person back at the heart of European public policy is the main message of the Church. This is what Cardinal Marx, President of COMECE, and Rev. Christopher Hill, President of the Conference of European Churches, intend to reaffirm in their meeting on 31 March with Mr Juncker, President of the European Commission. A statement will be published on this occasion.

The participation of Cardinal Marx at the Pope’s audience with the Heads of State on 24 March, the meeting with President Juncker on 31 March and the COMECE Congress in Rome on 27-29 October mark the importance that the Bishops of Europe attach to the role of the European Union as a peace project.

The Plenary Assemblies of COMECE are not open to the public.
